We have been purchasing coffee from the Martinez family and their partner farmers, who often comprise their friends and extended family, for many years now. Their operations in Guatemala are unrivaled, which makes sense because they are third generation coffee farmers themselves. The La Alma lot is a blend of many small farmers coffees from around the Huehuetenango growing region. Individual smallholder farms are perched on mountainsides between 1500 and 2100 meters above sea level and they grow mostly Caturra and Bourbon varieties. This coffee takes the place of our beloved Todos Santos on our menu, so if you liked that one you’ll love La Alma. We tastes sugar and spice, almond, milk chocolate, vanilla, red stone fruit, and berries. This coffee is also currently featured in our Golden Hour medium roast blend, but we love this one so much we feel it deserves its own release.
We have purchased more volume from this community of farmers (between this lot, Todos Santos, and two single farmer lots) than any other coffee on our menu for the past two years! The high market leading into harvest season this year means that these farmers also received record high payouts and we are proud to support their efforts toward quality and sustainability in Huehue. The sales of La Alma also supports the Guatemala Habitat for Humanity Smokeless stove program which gives families in Guatemala clean and efficient cook stoves, greatly improving air quality and lowering cooking times. We don’t usually advocate donating money to massive NGOs, but we trust these folks to select a worthwhile project that is actually meeting material needs of the Guatemalan farmers they work with!
